Special Ensemble Qualifications

CVYO hosts two ensembles that are only open to select members. See the information below regarding joining the Virtuosi and Flore ensembles.

Joining CVYO Virtuosi

The Virtuosi Ensemble is a chamber orchestra comprised primarily of the principal players of our Symphony Orchestra, and is the most prestigious ensemble in our program. Virtuosi studies an additional program in parallel with the Symphony Orchestra, performs 3 additional concerts, collaborates with professional musicians, and closes the season with the performance of an entire symphony.

Virtuosi performs in our “Dialogues Concert Series,” and members receive concert stipends to offset tuition costs.

Virtuosi members are required to be Symphony Orchestra members, and must play a principal audition to be eligible for consideration. Eligible members must be able to perform at all Dialogues Concerts and Special Events.

Virtuosi Chamber Music

Virtuosi’s “Dialogues Concert Series” opens with small chamber works (trios, quartets, etc), many with faculty and prestigious guest artists. To be considered for Virtuosi Chamber Music, please mark your interest during your application. Chamber groups schedule two chamber rehearsals in the weeks leading up to the concerts, and rehearse as artist groups (not as coached student groups).

Joining Flore Ensemble

The Flore Ensemble is comprised of Youth Strings members preparing to join Preparatory Orchestra and studies standard string orchestra repertoire. Members are selected by invitation. Musicians should indicate their interest on the application form and arrive to the first rehearsal of the season well prepared with their Youth Strings music, demonstrating they are ready for the challenge of Flore Ensemble.

$1,000 for the season or $700 for a single semester

  • Two monthly payments of $500 due in September and October.
  • Four monthly payments of $270 due in September, October, November, and December (a $80 payment plan fee).

Scholarships and Internships

  • Exceptional Leadership Scholarships (up to 25% of tuition) are available to principal players of the Symphony Orchestra. Recipients commit to guest coaching and mentoring their younger colleagues in Preparatory Orchestra and Youth Strings one to two times per semester. Candidates must have previously held principal positions for at least one semester in good standing.
  • Distinguished Young Artist Scholarships (up to 100% tuition) are available to principal players of the Symphony Orchestra who have qualified for Exceptional Leadership Scholarships in previous years. Recipients have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and reliability during their entire tenure at CVYO, are representative of CVYO in their community through competitions and volunteer work, and exhibit a level of technical ability and artistry beyond their years.
  • Internships are available that include partial tuition stipends in exchange for logistical volunteer work such as rehearsal setup, front desk work, administrative help, or media team. Most internships are scheduled on alternating weeks and come with 25% tuition stipends.
  • Scholarships and internships are paid at the end of the semester as a “tuition stipend” upon completion of internship work and confirmation of “good standing” in the orchestra.
  • “Good standing” in the orchestra may be jeopardized by excessive absences, tardiness, being unprepared for rehearsal, or poor communication.
